An easy way to practice gratitude (a daily practice)

There’s no denying it, we are indeed living in ‘interesting times’. The climate crisis, Brexit, race and gender issues, these are often unwelcome at the top of my mind and I’m sure these and many other issues occupy your thoughts too. (Artist: Katharina Lucia)

How do we stay buoyant and uplifted, despite hearing about all the injustice and tragedy in the world?

The Serenity Prayer often used by the 12 Step programmes, can be very useful for this situation; ‘Please grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.’ Though fierce iconic human rights activist Angela Davis has her own version of this:

I am no longer accepting things I cannot change. I’m changing the things I cannot accept – Angela Davis

I believe we all have an important contribution to make to the world, whether that’s through our work, or family, or in our community, or through side hustles. You may not yet be quite there, however by cultivating a sense of self-worth and confidence within yourself, you can start to change your own reality.

I spent 10 years searching: trying out different methods and practices to change and improve my life, understand my behaviour and reflect on my (it’s complicated!) past. I have made enormous changes over time, through daily habits and incremental adjustments, which gradually made a significant impact. 

One of these daily practices is feeling grateful for all the good things happening in my life. 

I might say, or write down, all the things I’m grateful for, today. There are people in the world struggling with basic needs, so be thankful for all the things we take for granted.

Even though some of these things may not be quite right, at this moment, by sending good thoughts to my neighbours, for example, I shifted my perception and now have a more easygoing attitude.

All our psychological suffering is due to our perception, which can be shifted and ultimately transformed.
