There was a time in my career when I didn’t feel confident speaking up. I was working in the digital sector, an exciting, fast-moving, creative industry, but also very male-dominated at the time. I often found myself in rooms where I was one of the only women. I had ideas, opinions, perspectives, but I didn’t always share them.
I’d second-guess myself, wonder if what I was about to say was “right,” wait for the perfect moment… and then miss it. From the outside, it probably looked like I was doing well. But inside, I knew I was holding back. At some point, I realised something had to change. I couldn’t keep waiting to feel confident, I had to create that confidence by doing the very thing that scared me.
So when the opportunity came up to speak at the Dare Conference, a live-streamed event with a big audience, I said yes. Even though every part of me felt terrified. This wasn’t a small talk in a safe room. This was a stage, cameras, a live audience, people watching online. And I remember thinking, who am I to be up there?
But I also knew I had something important to say. I spoke about SheSays Brighton, the community I had started to support women in digital and creative industries. A space where women could connect, learn, and step into opportunities they hadn’t always been given.
And as I spoke, something shifted. I stopped focusing on how I was being perceived. I stopped worrying about getting it perfect. I focused on the message and the impact. That talk became more than just a personal milestone. It was part of something much bigger. Because SheSays Brighton wasn’t just another meet-up. It was helping to change the face of the digital sector.
I started to see more companies hiring women into senior roles. Job descriptions were being rewritten to attract more diverse applicants. Conversations were shifting around inclusion, representation, and leadership. And it all started with creating a space, and being willing to talk about it. Looking back, I didn’t become confident before that talk. I became confident because of it.
Confidence doesn’t come first. Action does. Every time you speak up when it would be easier to stay quiet, you build it. Every time you say yes before you feel ready, you strengthen it. Every time you trust that your voice matters, you grow into it.
If you’ve ever sat in a meeting and held back your ideas, or questioned whether you’re experienced enough to speak, or felt like the only one in the room, you’re not alone. But you also don’t have to stay there. What you say matters more than you think. Your voice shapes conversations, influences decisions, and creates change, sometimes in ways you can’t even see yet.
That one talk I was so nervous about created ripples that went far beyond me. If you’re ready to stop holding back and start using your voice with more confidence and clarity, I’d love to support you. You can book a free 30-minute clarity call with me here: Book your free clarity call
