How to create your vision for the coming year

January is a good time to reflect on the past year’s successes and remember all the great things that you’ve achieved. Take some time to think about where you were this time last year. How much has changed and how much you’ve done. There may have been some key events, projects you’ve helped on, things you’ve created that have made an impact.

Most of the time, you can get too busy to spend time reflecting on how much you’ve done and there’s no celebration before you’ve moved onto the next project or piece of work that needs to be done. Spend some time remembering key moments: what did you learn this year? What did you enjoy? What are you still puzzled about? What could you do better this year? Reflecting on what you could do better and what brought you most joy is a good starting point to creating a vision for the coming year.

How do you want to feel at the end of the next year? What would need to happen in the next 12 months for you to feel more successful?

How could you ‘turn up’ all the past achievements? Could you earn more money? Could you get better reviews? Could you run for longer, faster? Could you win an award? Could you move or improve where you are living? Could you change or improve your role, your business or company?

Start writing a wish list of all the things you’d like to have in your dream job for example.

Ask yourself some key questions:

  • What sort of things do you want to be doing in your job?
  • What kind of people do you want to work with?
  • What sort of clients or customers do you want?
  • Where do you want to work?
  • What kinds of companies do you want to work for?
  • What job title do you wnat?
  • How many hours do you want to work?
  • Which days of the week?
  • Where is your place of work?
  • How much do you want to earn?

As you do this work, you might get some feelings: resistance, doubt, maybe even anger. Take a deep breath and do this exercise when you feel more open to play, do this with a sense of joy and excitement. Imagine I am your fairy godmother and I’m going to find this perfect job for you…. Just write the list, when you are feeling positive and excited about the possibilities the next year will bring.

Now you can either stop there. And put the list somewhere safe. I like to put it in an envelope and put it on my desk or somewhere I will see it every day.

This is the first step to delving deep into what you want to bring into your life for the coming year.
