When I saw that Time Out had named London Road, Brighton one of the top 7 places to live in the UK, I was super proud. This little patch of the city has been called “up and coming” for as long as I can remember, it’s full of life, character and community. I moved here 20 years ago, and I’ve watched it shift, grow and evolve, while keeping its raw charm.
London Road doesn’t try to be fancy. It’s messy in the best way. A jumble of nail bars, charity shops, art studios, and vegan cafés, where everyone from students to creatives, locals and DFLs all mingle together. It’s real Brighton: friendly, funny, a bit chaotic, and full of heart.
Here are my favourite local gems:

Moksha Café – My go-to brunch spot. Great coffee, hearty veggie breakfasts and always a friendly, buzzy vibe. There’s a reason people queue to get in.

The Rose Hill – A proper community hub: gigs, workshops, and electic nights that always feel welcoming. We’ve had some legendary parties here.

UnBarred Brewery – Tiny brewery, big character. Quality craft beer and a relaxed spot to meet mates on a sunny afternoon. Seating could be more comfy though.

Preston Park Rotunda Café – Coffee, cake and park life. Sit outside when you can and watch the sporty types and dog walkers. Best park in Brighton.

The Mud House – a lovely pottery studio! Perfect if you want to get your hands messy, try a wheel, or pick up something handmade.

The Little Loaf Bakery – Fresh bread that smells like heaven. Go early or miss out on your fave chewy brown loaf.

Bonsai Plant Kitchen – Clever, tasty vegan food that even non-vegans rave about. Bright flavours, thoughtful plates run by young hipsters.

Sunbird Café – A total hidden gem. Beautiful coffee, laid-back vibes, and a community feel. Middle-Eastern mezze plates and smoothies plus delicious cake.

Phoenix Gallery – A calm, inspiring spot full of shows and artist studios — excellent curation of new and avant garde artists.

Fatto a Mano – Proper sourdough pizza done really, really well. Casual, reliable, and always hits the spot. Try the sides: arancini or croquettes. Perfect.

Duke of York’s Picturehouse – This historic art house cinema with cosy seats. A Brighton classic.

Bardsley’s Chip Shop – A local institution. Crispy, comforting fish and chips – best in Brighton.

Carlito Burrito — Mexican food by Mexicans. Try the life-changing fish tacos or the enormous burritos. Wonderful cocktails too.
London Road/Preston Circus is only about a 10-minute walk to Brighton Station and the North Laine, which makes popping into town or meeting friends super easy.
