What to Do If You’re Feeling Overwhelmed by the News

Lately, it can feel like the world is on fire. Every scroll, swipe, or click brings another crisis, disaster, or injustice. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, or even numb, you’re not alone.
Here’s what you can do when the news feels like too much:
1. Pause Your Doomscrolling
Give yourself permission to take a break. You are not ignoring the world, you’re protecting your energy so you can stay informed without burning out. Try checking the news just once a day, or muting triggering topics for a while.

2. Curate Your Sources
Not all news is equal. Choose trusted, balanced outlets over sensational or constant live updates. Follow journalists and commentators who give you insight, not just outrage.

3. Focus on What You Can Do
Can you donate? Volunteer? Support a friend? Even small actions can help channel your anxiety into something useful. You don’t need to fix the whole world — start local, start small.

4. Feel Your Feelings
It’s okay to grieve, to rage, to cry. You don’t have to be “strong” all the time. Let the feelings move through you — then ground yourself again in what’s real and good in your life.

5. Come Back to the Present
Touch something solid. Drink water. Go outside. Speak to someone kind. The news is part of the world — but so is your breath, your body, your community. Start there.

You’re allowed to rest.
Staying informed doesn’t mean staying overwhelmed. Take care of your nervous system so you can respond — not just react.
